The Way to Go Project - Planning for Inclusive Access in Wales
`Good fortune is what happens when opportunity meets with planning`
What is the Way to Go Project?
The project aims to:
Develop knowledge of the planning process
Increase awareness of the social model of disability
Raise awareness of the positive role disabled people and access groups can play in Planning
Encourage stronger relationships between planners and disabled people
It is widely accepted that disabled people generally have fewer opportunities and a poorer quality of life than many non-disabled people. Local Authority Planning departments have a duty to promote disability equality. Access groups in Wales struggle without resources to improve their knowledge of the planning system and ways to make a positive contribution to the process.
Despite good intentions, the introduction of Design and Access Statements in planning applications has been a source of confusion and frustration for planners and disability groups. Now the Equality Act 2010 has replaced the Disability Discrimination Act there is a need for training and clarification.
Who is involved in the project?
A Project Advisory Group will monitor and steer progress, consisting
of representatives from Disability Wales, The Equalities and Human
Rights Commission, the Welsh Assembly Government and the
project co-ordinator.
Input from disabled people, planners and their organisations is vital to ensure their views and opinions are heard. A virtual` group of people will help steer the project and will be consulted on the content and delivery of the training.
The project will be co-ordinated by an independent consultant. The training days will be designed and delivered by independent consultants.
Who is the project aimed at?
Local Authority Planners, disabled people, disabled people`s groups, access groups and others are involved in the planning process.
What will happen during the project?
The project consists of six training modules to be delivered throughout Wales.
The six modules are designed to be linked together but can be attended independently.
Training Modules:
Disability Equality and the Social Model in Action
An introduction to the Planning system
Working together - building partnerships and facilitating relationships
Inclusive Access
Negotiation and conflict resolution
The Way to Go` day - summarising learning and discussing next steps
First stage will be delivered in South East Wales between October 2010 and March 2011, covering five Local Authority areas of Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen.
The second stage will be delivered in the six Local Authority areas of Flintshire, Denbighshire, Wrexham, Anglesey, Gwynedd and Conwy
The third stage will be delivered in the four Local Authority areas of Carmarthenshire, Pembrokeshire, Swansea and Neath Port Talbot.
The fourth stage will be delivered in the five Local Authority areas of Cardiff, the Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taff, Bridgend and Merthyr Tydfil.
All stages will be open to people from Powys and Ceredigion, depending on preference for attendance.
How will people be kept informed of progress?
Regular progress bulletins will be made available on the Disability Wales website, news, report and events, on Facebook and Twitter. Training modules will be widely advertised as far in advance as possible. DW and the project co-ordinator can be contacted for further information if required.
Is there a charge for the training days?
The training is free for disabled people, disabled people`s groups, access groups and planners. A lunch and refreshments will be provided. Disability Wales can also offer financial assistance with travel, accommodation, communication assistance or personal assistance. Please contact Disability Wales for further information.
What will happen after the project is completed?
We expect the project will raise awareness of disability and access issues and promote good relationships between planners and disabled people`s groups and communities both locally and nationally.
How can I book a place on the training courses?
We anticipate a high level of demand for the training modules, so to avoid disappointment please contact DW for booking details soon.
