Disability Action Plan Structure

1. Statement of intent

This is where you put your equal opportunities statement or statement about what you broad intentions are with regard to disabled people.

You could use something about the social model of disability e.g.

"xxxxx recognises that people are disabled not by their impairments, but by the physical, social, economic and attitudinal barriers in society.

xxxxx aims to identify and address the barriers that exclude disabled people from the organisation's activities, both as artists/performers and as participants/audience (put whatever is appropriate)".

The rest of the Action Plan should be structured as follows: Outline what you are aiming to do (the aim), break this down into steps that need to be taken to make it happen (the action). Give target dates to each step. Note who is responsible for ensuring that each action is carried out. Follow the same structure for each section.

2. Physical access

(where you perform, tour, rehearse)

Show what you are aiming to do to improve physical access

3. Outreach

(what you do to encourage new participants & audience)

Outline specific projects where relevant and say what you aim to do to ensure that disabled people/children/young people can participate

4. Marketing and publicity

(your printed publicity, programmes, written information)

In the same way show what you are going to do to make your publicity more accessible

5. Consultation

(how you consult with disabled people on the development of your project)

For example if you have consulted with Disability Arts Cymru, this should be noted. Also mention any local groups you talk to, or aim to talk to.

6. Training

Includes any training plans in the action plan, showing what is being done to make the training accessible, and what disability specific training you intend to do e.g. Disability Equality Training and /or training for workshop leaders.

7. Monitoring

If you can, it's a good idea to keep some kind of record of the numbers of disabled people who participate or attend. If you have any questions about this, contact Disability Arts Cymru.
